UPCYCLE, RECYCLE, REPURPOSE By Aaron Faber

A challenge in fine jewelry design is creating wearable non-narrative works that embody an underlying commitment to reuse, recycle or upcycle everyday objects to fine jewelry. Recycled gold and gemstones are prevalent in designer jewelry, though not common in the industry. Upcycled and repurposed designer jewelry, including works with historical references within the new jewel, are less common still, which is why we to highlight how artist jewelers are looking at green jewelry.

Heidi Lowe Earrings Galore 2022

Earrings Galore, an annual juried exhibition, is a rich and diverse array of earrings made by emerging and established studio jewelers. Each artist’s unique approach to the earring format will be represented in a cohesive grouping of earrings. The exhibition is intended to create more access for the public to see art jewelry, cultivate connections with the community and provide an opportunity for visitors to add new pieces to their jewelry collections. The pop-up exhibition will be held in conjunction with NYC Jewelry Week.

The Earrings Galore Exhibition is a perfect manifestation of the purpose of the gallery. The show is very accessible; because of the wide variety of designs and price range, everyone can find a pair of earrings one likes, whether one is new to art jewelry or a seasoned collector. It’s easy to recognize the diversity in the creative approaches and artistic voices when artists’ work is in the same jewelry format, exhibited side by side. All the work in the exhibition is handmade with thoughtfulness, attention to detail and its functionality considered. It is also a sampling representative of ideas, themes, materials and formal qualities being explored by artists in the art field as a whole.

Featured in SNAG: Hope is Resiliency Jewelry Online Exhibition

This SNAG Member Exhibition explores how the participants define the resiliency of hope through their creative practice. The in-person exhibition was juried by Nora McCarthy, owner of Gallery 2052, and curator Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy with an emphasis on showcasing SNAG’s diverse membership: in materials and aesthetics, levels of experience and background. Both one-of-kind statement pieces and production-style work are included. The online exhibition features 250 works by 148 artists.
